Saturday, February 9, 2008, A woke up with a very green, snotty nose. Yuck! His first cold of the year. No big deal except that C also woke up congested, not nursing well, lethargic and HOT! By the end of the day C's nose was running so I called his pediatrician's on call nurse. She said to finish nursing him and gave me a myriad of things to look for - breathing hesitations, fever, nazzle rumbles, etc. I called her back to report a fever of 100.7 (rectal reading - C was a champ). Remember C is 8 weeks old, so we were sent to Cook's Children's at 9pm to check for RSV, flu, etc.
There must have been at least 100 people with standing room only when we arrived around 9:30 pm. Luckily do to his age, fever and congestion we were rapidly seen. We are pleased to report that after blood work (the lab tech hit his tiny vein the first time - she was awesome), a nose wash to check for RSV & flu (awful experience) and a urine sample (not fair since his circumcision was the day before), C was healthy except for fever and congestion and no RSV or flu! Praise God that it wasn't worse and that I'm able to nurse to keep his antibodies fighting like they are supposed to - white blood cells looked great! Did you know that babies can't breathe through their mouths until 6 months old? This is why it was a big deal to have nazzle congestion with a tiny one.
We were lucky this time but it could have been worse. Remember to wash your hands and keep your older ones healthy to help keep your little babies healthy. So we are hibernating a bit to build up our immune systems a little bit. A cold is just a cold unless you are a baby. Please help us winter Mommies to keep our babies healthy.

Crazy comment I'm leaving, but why did he just now get circumcised?
Good question. We were told that there wasn't enough skin by the on call Dr. for the practice the day he was born. At two days Caleb's pediatrician agreed, but at 2 weeks said all was good for a circumcision. Honestly, Scott and I can't see a bit of difference. The Dr. and nurse at Cook's said this happens all of the time and it all boils down to the pediatricians not wanting to do the procedure. Crazy, I know!
